Reverse osmosis is a cross-flow membrane separation process, capable of rejecting macromolecules and dissolved substances from a solvent, usually water. The substances retained in the reject flow during the separation process can be either organic or inorganic, and are on the angstrom size. Its retention depends on its molecular weight, geometry, electric charge and other factors.
Several types of membrane can be found on the market, and it’s selection for each application depends on the quality of the raw water to be treated, as well as the quality to be achieved on the permeate. Same types are High rejection, Low pressure, Fouling resistant and High temperature sanitizable (85°C), among others.
After the selection of the membrane type, it is necessary to calculate the number of elements of the system, which depends on the water flow required and the SDI. This last analysis (SDI) is the only parameter that can guarantee the robustness of the demineralization process, since it provides and idea of the fouling tendency (amount of particles under 5 microns or organic matter that can deposit on the reverse osmosis membrane). A high solid concentration translates into a high SDI, for which a higher effective filtration area will be needed, raising the number of elements of the unit.
Due to the different sources of water available, a pretreatment is generally needed in order to maximize the useful life of the membranes and to avoid fouling, scaling or degradation. The most frequent problems include: insufficient filtration, poorly effective or incorrectly selected antiscalants, leakage of oxidizing agents and high organic, among others.

NEW – “HOT WATER SANITIZABLE MEMBRANES”
Due to the demand of a sector of the market, Unitek has developed a reverse osmosis system, specific for food applications, where sanitization has a fundamental role.
Besides from the standard configuration for these type of applications, such as sanitary construction, skid-incorporated CIP, Rinse with permeate, non invasive instrumentation, etc, we added the possibility of using hot water sanitizable reverse osmosis membranes (at 85°C), which present themselves as an insuperable advantage for maintenance without biocide addition. This procedure can be held for 60-90 minutes for each sanitization, without damaging the element.

NEW - "CLAMP CLOSURE REVERSE OSMOSIS PRESSURE VESSELS"
Keeping track of the market requirements, we offer the possibility of high pressure reverse osmosis vessels with clamp connections on the permeate and the reject side.
This way, in the case of a microbiologic contamination, it becomes much easier to obtain good results after the chemical cleaning.
